Current local news affecting today's business traveler
The days are finally getting longer and spring is in the air – the perfect time to plan a city trip. You probably already have a few cities at the top of your bucket list. But what about adding Wroclaw and San Sebastián, this year’s European Capitals of Culture?
San Sebastián has set out to actively involve visitors in its cultural program during its year in the spotlight. The program is thus aligned along three axes, referred to as “Lighthouses” and called “Peace,” “Life” and “Voices.” And of course cuisine and fine dining are also high on the agenda in the cultural capital on the sea. Along with the International Film Festival of San Sebastián, one of the most important in Europe, an exhibition will be held in 2016 titled “Peace Treaties,” featuring 300 artworks by European masters loaned by a total of 21 museums. Culture is to serve in the Basque city as a means for promoting peaceful coexistence.
Together with San Sebastián, the city of Wroclaw (Breslau) in Poland is the other European Capital of Culture this year. Wroclaw will host twelve weekends of culture, putting on a special program of events for both visitors and residents. The themes range from “Jazz on the Oder” to a literary evening to a Theatre Olympics. Visitors can look forward to a city performance called “Flow” in June, which will put the River Oder in the limelight as the “flowing spine of the city.” With the city’s multicultural heritage and its future in mind, a concert will be given by an orchestra that includes artists from the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Israel, performing a symphony composed by young people from these countries.
In an event unifying the two capitals of culture, Wroclaw will reach out to its sister city San Sebastián on 18 June with a “Spanish Night.” Some 500 artists will take the stage at Wroclaw’s main stadium to perform a zarzuela show, based on a Spanish musical tradition.
