Zika virus in South America
A rise in the number of cases of Zika virus has been observed in some South American countries – especially Guatemala, Colombia and Brazil. The virus is related to the pathogens that cause dengue and yellow fever and produces symptoms such as headache and joint pain, fever, exhaustion and a skin rash. A vaccination against the virus does not exist.
Since there is a possible connection with birth defects, pregnant women should take special precautions against mosquito bites.
