Event managers today are not only project managers, buyers, accountants and salespeople. They also conceive and carry out events that are emotionally stirring, that lastingly anchor information and messages in the participants’ minds, or that arouse the desire for a particular product or service. Basic knowledge of psychology can be very helpful here.
Psychology is commonly described as an empirical science whose subject is human experience and behavior. One theory for explaining human behavior is the S-O-R (Stimulus-Organism-Response) paradigm. It posits that a stimulus is processed in the brain of the participant, leading to a response.
Applied to meetings and events, this means that the familiar logo of the company hosting the event (stimulus) is perceived by the participants (organism) and processed, ideally leading to a positive association between the event and the company. A successful event thus helps to enhance the company’s image in the participants’ minds (response).
Perception and experience are heavily influenced by factors such as culture, education, society and situational mood. Therefore, a critical factor for success is to match the stimuli used in the event to the specific target group.
